Clans of the Great Forest

How DarknessClan came to exist

The scent of blood hung heavily in the air.

The forest suddenly seemed terrifying. Dapple took a step back, afraid. She wondered if she had misheard her father when he said that he was heading to the swamp. It was the darkest place in the area, though not much sunlight penetrated the thick canopy of the trees where they lived.

Dapple spotted a bundle of grey in the distance. Her fears were forgotten as she dashed forward, only to skid to a halt as her front paws splashed into muddy water. She stared into the large pool of murky water separating her from her father. Did she imagine it, or did something move under water?

Dapple let out a shriek when she heard a low growl behind her. She spun around, her eyes widening in horror when she saw the black creature, a single white stripe running from its nose and down its back. Badger!

A yowl sounded from behind the badger, and two cats leaped out from the trees and raked their claws across its face. It growled and reared up on its hindlegs. The two cats darted away right before it slammed its paws down.

Dapple knew that she ought to run, but her paws were frozen to the ground. Then a third cat, a brown tom, raced out and snatched up Dapple, biting gently on the scruff of her neck. He ran back the way he had come from.

She could hear the other two cats following. As they began to slow down after putting a considerable distance between them and the badger, some parts of the two cats’ conversation drifted to her ears, “Protect…” “Kit…killed.” Then, the exhaustion and fear took its tool on Dapple, and she fell into darkness.

Her eyes flew open and she leapt to her paws, fur bristling. She looked around, then forced herself to calm down.

“Dapplepaw?" Good, you are awake. Silvercloud is looking for you,” a brown cat peered into the den from outside.

“Tell her I’m coming!” Dapplepaw called back. She gave herself a quick wash, muttering, “Just a dream. Just a dream.” After flattening her ruffled fur, she hurried out of the apprentices’ den.

“Morning, Dapplepaw,” a silver-grey she-cat meowed from beside the camp entrance. “We’ll leave as soon as Redstorm and Twigheart are done eating.”

The light grey apprentice glanced over to the fresh-kill pile, picking out the dark ginger pelt of Redstorm and the brown tabby pelt of Twigheart. She sat down beside Silvercloud to wait.

“You are quiet today,” Silvercloud observed. “On a normal day, you would be impatient to leave.” Her mentor paused. “Same nightmare again?”

Dapple nodded slowly. She always felt grateful to Silvercloud, Redstorm and Twigheart for saving her during the badger attack moons ago. They had even helped to carry her father’s body back to their camp, and gave him a proper burial. She was glad when ShadeClan accepted her as a member of their Clan, and had been training under Silvercloud ever since. Twigheart was still an apprentice when she met him, and was trained by Redstorm. Perhaps because he was closer to her age, Dapplepaw found it easier to confide in him. She felt a little annoyed when Twigheart had told Silvercloud about the reoccurring nightmares, the same thing over and over again, but she understood that he meant well.

“Dapplepaw!”

The she-cat blinked, then turned to Silvercloud. Her mentor sighed.

“Sorry,” Dapplepaw mumbled. “I was thinking.”

“Nightstar will be joining us for this morning’s patrol. Focus.”

Dapplepaw perked up. If she performed well in front of the leader today, she might become a warrior today! Ever since Twigheart’s warrior ceremony a moon ago, the grey apprentice had been eager to become a warrior as well.

Silvercloud let out a mrrow of laughter. “Looks like you are feeling better to go already,” she purred.

“You bet!” Dapplepaw sprang to her paws as Redstorm and Twigheart approached. “Let’s go!” she dashed off into the forest.

“Dapplepaw, wait!” Silvercloud rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Extreme moodswings,” she meowed to Redstorm and Twigheart jokingly, following her apprentice into the forest.

Twigheart and Redstorm exchanged looks, then raced off after them.

“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the Blackstone for a Clan meeting!” Nightstar yowled from the blackened stone. According to the elders, a huge fire had once raged through ShadeClan’s camp, and the Blackstone was the only thing still recognisable when they returned.

Dapplepaw sat proudly beside her mentor. Both of their pelts were sleek and shiny, having groomed themselves thoroughly for the ceremony.

The patrol had gone well. Nightstar had been impressed at Dapplepaw’s ability to scent even the faintest smells, and her hunting skills were quite well developed.

“We are gathered here this night to witness the growth of one of our apprentices, Dapplepaw,” he meowed, beckoning for the she-cat to move forward. Silvercloud led the apprentice to the base of the Blackstone, then stepped back.

“I, Nightstar, leader of ShadeClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Dapplepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?”

“I do,” Dapplepaw meowed firmly.

“Then by the powers of MysticClan, I give you your warrior name. Dapplepaw, from this moment on you will be known as Dappleheart. ShadeClan honours your determination and courage, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ShadeClan.” Nightstar leaped down from the Blackstone and rested his muzzle on top of Dappleheart’s head. She licked his shoulder respectfully.

“Dappleheart! Dappleheart!” the Clan cheered.

“Congratulations, Dappleheart!” Redstorm meowed as he padded towards the front.

The newly-made warrior’s eyes glowed with pride and excitement. She was a warrior at last!
