Busy week.

Chapter 1 of The New Cat and Chapter 5 of The Outsider up on FFN. Spent quite some time putting prologue and allegiances together for both stories and replacing it on FFN, thanks to one beta reader. I appreciate that he’s trying to ‘save’ my stories, but his choice of words are downright bad. Made it sound like he was threatening that if the allegiances were not removed, the stories would be removed. He doesn’t even know that the allegiances are part of a true Warriors story! He doesn’t even read Warriors!

Why is chapter one a list?

It's nice to have a good preamble, but lists were illegal for years on FFN, and when the administrator does his rounds in Warriors, heads are going to roll, including this story*.
Remove the list/cast announcement/trait listing chapter, and you will be within the guidelines. By the way, too many characters make the head crowded. Quality over quantity, dear colleague. Some people manage to make in-depth writing with barely one or two characters, taking time to unveil their traits via actions, not outright stating what is what. When you just barrage us with names, it's more of an encyclopedia experience rather than fiction. Lists are bad*.

However, I must disagree with the cast list necessity. Some series have a multitude of characters, be it Lord of the Rings*, Sense and Sensibility or Twilight*. There is no excuse for adding a script-type cast list or using all the given characters. In fact, it is often fallacious to abuse numbers due to quality loss. Should you have non-story list chapters during my second visit, the story's continuity will be at risk*.

I don't write out a character list for other stories, but I do for Warriors stories, because that's what the original writers do.

What if I put a prologue after the allegiances, on the same chapter? Would that be acceptable?

That would work, but I must warn you that the moderators are unaware of the intricacies in your fandom, so every processed story will be given default treatment. If they're in a hurry, they might not notice there is prose below. Suggestion: any included list should be shorter than the chapter it is attached to. That, or you can break the list into small author's notes in the beginning or end of a chapter, so it doesn't obstruct the view.

*Compare Twilight with Warriors. Are there as many characters in Twilight? Only in Breaking Dawn, and an index was at the back of the book. And even if they had many characters, they were not all main characters.
For Lord of the Rings, same reason as the main characters thingy. Throughout the whole story, the focus was on the Fellowship, and only some parts deviate to people like Elrond. Plus, there were elves, dwarves and hobbits. Warriors is all about cats.

I was only polite to him because I didn’t think it was worth trying to fight with someone who doesn’t read and understand how Warriors stories are written. I’m damn irritated with this guy. His review is only about how the allegiances are breaking the rules on FFN, but nothing about the writing skill, like too much/too little description/dialogue, spelling or grammar mistakes etc. –.-

 

Practical Grade 8 postponed to next year March, because the exam books were all out of stock according to my piano teacher. And seems like there is another new syllabus coming out in July this year.
