I’m posting the whole story so far of ‘How DarknessClan came to exist’ because I made a few edits on the site itself, and updated a little but didn’t post here.

CotGF: How DarknessClan came to exist

The scent of blood hung heavily in the air.

The forest suddenly seemed terrifying. Dapple took a step back, afraid. She wondered if she had misheard her father when he said that he was heading to the swamp. It was the darkest place in the area, though not much sunlight penetrated the thick canopy of the trees where they lived.

Dapple spotted a bundle of grey in the distance. Her fears were forgotten as she dashed forward, only to skid to a halt as her front paws splashed into muddy water. She stared into the large pool of murky water separating her from her father. Did she imagine it, or did something move under water?

Dapple let out a shriek when she heard a low growl behind her. She spun around, her eyes widening in horror when she saw the black creature, a single white stripe running from its nose and down its back. Badger!

A yowl sounded from behind the badger, and two cats leaped out from the trees and raked their claws across its face. It growled and reared up on its hindlegs. The two cats darted away right before it slammed its paws down.

Dapple knew that she ought to run, but her paws were frozen to the ground. Then a third cat, a brown tom, raced out and snatched up Dapple, biting gently on the scruff of her neck. He ran back the way he had come from.

She could hear the other two cats following. As they began to slow down after putting a considerable distance between them and the badger, some parts of the two cats’ conversation drifted to her ears, “Protect…” “Kit…killed.” Then, the exhaustion and fear took its tool on Dapple, and she fell into darkness.

Her eyes flew open and she leapt to her paws, fur bristling. She looked around, then forced herself to calm down.

“Dapplepaw?" Good, you are awake. Silvercloud is looking for you,” a brown cat peered into the den from outside.

“Tell her I’m coming!” Dapplepaw called back. She gave herself a quick wash, muttering, “Just a dream. Just a dream.” After flattening her ruffled fur, she hurried out of the apprentices’ den.

“Morning, Dapplepaw,” a silver-grey she-cat meowed from beside the camp entrance. “We’ll leave as soon as Redstorm and Twigheart are done eating.”

The light grey apprentice glanced over to the fresh-kill pile, picking out the dark ginger pelt of Redstorm and the brown tabby pelt of Twigheart. She sat down beside Silvercloud to wait.

"You are quiet today,” Silvercloud observed. “On a normal day, you would be impatient to leave.” Her mentor paused. “Same nightmare again?”

Dapple nodded slowly. She always felt grateful to Silvercloud, Redstorm and Twigheart for saving her during the badger attack moons ago. They had even helped to carry her father’s body back to their camp, and gave him a proper burial. She was glad when ShadeClan accepted her as a member of their Clan, and had been training under Silvercloud ever since. Twigheart was still an apprentice when she met him, and was trained by Redstorm. Perhaps because he was closer to her age, Dapplepaw found it easier to confide in him. She felt a little annoyed when Twigheart had told Silvercloud about the reoccurring nightmares, the same thing over and over again, but she understood that he meant well.

“Dapplepaw!”

The she-cat blinked, then turned to Silvercloud. Her mentor sighed.

“Sorry,” Dapplepaw mumbled. “I was thinking.”

“Nightstar will be joining us for this morning’s patrol. Focus.”

Dapplepaw perked up. If she performed well in front of the leader today, she might become a warrior today! Ever since Twigheart’s warrior ceremony a moon ago, the grey apprentice had been eager to become a warrior as well.

Silvercloud let out a mrrow of laughter. “Looks like you are feeling better to go already,” she purred.

“You bet!” Dapplepaw sprang to her paws as Redstorm and Twigheart approached. “Let’s go!” she dashed off into the forest.

"Dapplepaw, wait!” Silvercloud rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Extreme moodswings,” she meowed to Redstorm and Twigheart jokingly, following her apprentice into the forest.

Twigheart and Redstorm exchanged looks, then raced off after them.

“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the Blackstone for a Clan meeting!” Nightstar yowled from the blackened stone. According to the elders, a huge fire had once raged through ShadeClan’s camp, and the Blackstone was the only thing still recognisable when they returned.

Dapplepaw sat proudly beside her mentor. Both of their pelts were sleek and shiny, having groomed themselves thoroughly for the ceremony.

The patrol had gone well. Nightstar had been impressed at Dapplepaw’s ability to scent even the faintest smells, and her hunting skills were quite well developed.

“We are gathered here this night to witness the growth of one of our apprentices, Dapplepaw,” he meowed, beckoning for the she-cat to move forward. Silvercloud led the apprentice to the base of the Blackstone, then stepped back.

“I, Nightstar, leader of ShadeClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Dapplepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?”

“I do,” Dapplepaw meowed firmly.

“Then by the powers of MysticClan, I give you your warrior name. Dapplepaw, from this moment on you will be known as Dappleheart. ShadeClan honours your determination and courage, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ShadeClan.” Nightstar leaped down from the Blackstone and rested his muzzle on top of Dappleheart’s head. She licked his shoulder respectfully.

“Dappleheart! Dappleheart!” the Clan cheered.

“Congratulations, Dappleheart!” Redstorm meowed as he padded towards the front.

The newly-made warrior’s eyes glowed with pride and excitement. She was a warrior at last!

* * * * * * * *

Dappleheart got to her paws and padded around the camp silently. Most cats were still sleeping, but she could hear quiet mutterings from the medicine cat’s den, telling her that Eaglewing was awake and going through his store of herbs.

As the sun began to peek over the treetops, Dappleheart stretched, glad that her vigil was almost over. She tilted her head up to face the sun, eyes closed, enjoying the light and warmth that only entered the camp in the early morning. Though the she-cat had adapted to living in the shadows and the colder territory, the new warrior still enjoyed the sun whenever she could.

The grey she-cat caught the scent of kit before something slammed into her paws. She opened her eyes and put out a paw to stop the kit from falling over.

“Hi Dappleheart!” Sandkit greeted cheerfully.

Dappleheart nodded to him, biting on her tongue when she almost spoke.

Sandkit tilted his head. “Are you still doing your vigil? You can’t talk?”

Dappleheart nodded again. She looked up when she spotted a movement out of the corner of her eye. Twigheart padded out of the warriors’ den, heading towards her.

“Sandkit, what are you doing out alone? Go back to the nursery, your mother will be worried if she finds you missing when she wakes,” Twigheart meowed.

The kit scampered back to the nursery, glancing back once, then squeezed through the brambles.

“You can go and rest now, Dappleheart,” the other warrior mewed. “Brightflame has you on the hunting patrol after sunhigh.”

Dappleheart stretched open her mouth in a huge yawn. “It was quite easy to keep silent when there was no one to talk to at night, but when someone speaks to you, it’s hard to keep your mouth shut!” she grumbled good-naturedly.

Twigheart twitched his ears amusedly. “I’m sure every newly-made warrior felt the same. Now go and get some sleep, or you won’t be able to focus on the hunting patrol later.”

“Alright, alright, bossy furball," Dappleheart yawned as she padded away, towards the apprentices’ den. Then she realised her mistake, shooting a glare at Twigheart when he let out a mrrow of laughter. She changed her direction, heading towards the warriors’ den, stopping to dip her head respectfully to Brightflame as the deputy came out. Dappleheart was too tired to care where she slept, and settled for an empty nest not far from the entrance. She fell asleep almost instantly.

Dappleheart padded warily along the path. She did not recognize the place, it was definitely not ShadeClan territory. Did she wander into another Clan’s territory? But the place did not have a scent that belonged to any of the Clans she knew, and the she-cat was sure that she did not step out of the camp since the warrior’s ceremony. Was it a dream, then? It felt too realistic to be one.

Her pawsteps quickened. She glanced around furtively, starting to get terrified. The trees on either side of the path seemed to close in on her. Sunlight had filtered through the gaps in the canopy of the forest not long ago, but there was now there was none shining through.

Dappleheart was running now, desperate to get out of this unknown place. She skidded around a corner, her paws sliding on the dead leaves that littered the forest floor. her eyes widened when she saw bright light in front of her. She dashed towards it.

The warrior slowed as she entered the bright light. As her eyes focused, she gasped. She was standing at the edge of a clearing. The grass seemed to ripple like water as the wind blew across the glade. The trees around the clearing no longer seemed menacing, instead, they seemed as if they were sleeping peacefully. Dappleheart instantly calmed. Not only that, the whole place was glowing dimly.

She glanced back. The path where she had come from had disappeared.

There was a rustle behind her. Dappleheart spun around.

“Father!” she recognized the light grey cat that stood before her immediately. Rushing forward, she pressed against her father, feeling a sense of security wash over her.

“Dapple, my daughter,” he muttered, covering her with licks. “How have you been?”

Dappleheart raised her head to look at her father. “I felt so lonely after you disappeared…ShadeClan cats found me and took me in…I’d just become a warrior. My name is Dappleheart now,” she meowed.

There was a faraway look in the grey cat’s eyes, as if he was recalling the past, remembering the events that occurred long ago. “Of course,” he whispered. “They mentioned it…”

“Who mentioned what, father?” Dappleheart moved to stand in front of her father. Her ears twitched in confusion.

The grey cat’s gaze snapped to his daughter’s eyes, and Dappleheart almost gasped at the intensity of the blue eyes.

When he spoke again, his voice was strong. “I am a member of MysticClan, Dappleheart. To right the wrong that ShadeClan had done long ago, I was invited to join MysticClan.”

The she-cat stared, wide-eyed, at her father.

He closed his eyes. “MysticClan asked me not to speak to you in your dreams until you became a warrior. They said that it might take some time for those living to tell you the truth.”

The grey cat locked eyes with Dappleheart once again. “Have they told you?”

“What? Tell me what?” Dappleheart mewed, bewildered.

“Look for the truth, Dappleheart. Find out. How I died.”

The she-cat jerked awake. She narrowed her eyes against the bright sunlight filtering in through the small gaps between the branches of the warriors’ den. Confused, she sat up.

As Dappleheart began grooming the scraps of moss from her fur, she tried to sort out her thoughts. What wrong did ShadeClan do? And what did her father mean? Wasn’t he killed by the badger that almost killed her?

When she finally emerged from the warriors’ den, Dappleheart was no closer to getting any answers.

The Clan deputy was standing beside the camp entrance with his apprentice. As Dappleheart headed over, Twigheart joined them.

She dipped her head in greeting to Brightflame, who nodded and led the way out of camp. As Dappleheart padded through the forest, the scents of prey pushed her dream to the back of her mind, and she thought no more about it as the hunting patrol went on.

* * * * * * * *

“Successful hunt?” Redstorm looked up from his mouse as Dappleheart and Brightheart’s apprentice added their catch of the hunting patrol to the fresh-kill pile.

Dappleheart nodded, her eyes glowing. “There’s still more in the forest. Twigheart and Brightflame are waiting for Lakepaw and me to get the rest.”

Redstorm opened his mouth to reply, but was cut off by a yowl. Alarmed, he leapt to his paws. Nightstar dashed out of his den with Frostfeather and Darkflower.

A ginger she-cat limped into camp, holding up one hindleg awkwardly and bleeding heavily from one shoulder.

“Honeypaw! What happened?” Nightstar demanded.

“Rogues…six…fighting Silvercloud and…Owlwing…” Honeypaw’s limbs gave out and she collapsed to the ground, barely conscious.

Hazelfeather pushed through the crowd of cats that had formed around Honeypaw, a wad of cobwebs swathed around one paw. She began treating the battered apprentice.

“What’s going on?” Twigheart asked, having returned with Brightflame, managing to carry all the prey somehow.

“Dappleheart, Twigheart, Ashpaw, Smokepaw and myself will join the battle,” Nightstar announced. “Brightflame and the other warriors, stay back to guard the camp. We don’t know how many of the rogues there are.”

The deputy nodded, understanding the situation immediately. The two apprentices Smokepaw and Ashpaw joined Dappleheart, Twigheart and Nightstar swiftly, their eyes gleaming in anticipation of the battle. The ShadeClan leader raced out of camp, the rest of the patrol following closely behind.

Honeypaw’s trail was easy to follow, her fear scent was clearly distinguished from the rest of the forest. Long before the patrol reached the site of battle, screeching and yowling could be heard. The scent of blood filled the air.

Silvercloud and Owlwing were badly outnumbered. As the patrol fell upon the rogue cats, Dappleheart saw Owlwing collapse. Yowling a challenge, she launched herself at the white tom that had dealt the last blow.

Her claws raked the white fur, but the cat twisted away before Dappleheart could get a firm grip. A paw slammed into her flank, she staggered and almost lost balance. She leaped back, teeth bared and hissing. The whit tom smirked, then sprang forward.

Dappleheart darted to the left, but not fast enough. The rogue’s claws slashed into her side, drawing blood. Dappleheart wrenched away and leaped at the cat again.

Her paws hit empty ground. Confused, Dappleheart looked around. Then a heavy weight smashed into her back, pinning her to the ground. She felt claws digging into her flesh, and a jaw close around her neck, cutting off the air, choking her.

Dappleheart tried to throw the cat off, but he was too heavy, immobilising her limbs, weighing down on her. She started to panic.

Suddenly, the weight was lifted off her, the jaws around her throat gone. Dappleheart breathed in deeply. The air had never tasted so sweet before.

The warrior only took a short moment to recover. She scrambled to her paws, spotting the white tom grappling with Twigheart. As she watched, the rogue overpowered her Clanmate. Twigheart lost his balance, and fell. The white cat reared back on his hindlegs, raising his unsheathed claws to strike.

Dappleheart sprang towards the rogue. Caught unaware, the white tom hesitated, and Dappleheart managed to knock him down, biting down on his ear. In a flash, he was up again, throwing her off. She landed a few tail-lengths away, winded.

The white cat towered over her, snarling, blood from his torn ear trickling down his face. Dappleheart tried to stand, but he dealt a blow to her head that blurred her vision and left her winded again. She felt the hot breath on her neck fur as he lowered his jaws to deliver the killing bite.
